The suggestion is ringed in gold with a star and named at the bottom: Odinslundsgatan, a six-minute walk, 524 metres, free. Other free spaces sit around it as green zeros. Rutis’ pick

The problem Rutis solves

Parking is not the hard part. Choosing wisely is.

You are going to an address you do not know, and three questions decide where you leave the car:

  • What does it cost?
  • How long may I stay?
  • How far do I have to walk?

No one place has all three. You have to find the address on the map yourself, pan around to see what is nearby, and click between parking spaces for prices and parking rules.

In the end you go “Ah, I’ll just take this one.”

There should be an easier way.

How it works

Step 01

Type where you are going

The address of the concert, the museum or the meeting.

Step 02

Say what you need

How long you need to stay, what you are willing to pay and how far you are willing to walk.

Step 03

Pick a space

Rutis suggests one. Every other space that meets your requirements stays on the map with its price.

Step 04

Drive there

Open the space straight in your phone’s map app and get directions all the way. Meeting someone? Share the space with them, so you both drive to the same place.

The recommendation

Cheapest is not always best.

A free space is not much use if you may only stay 30 minutes. And the cheapest space may not be worth it if it leaves you a 20-minute walk.

You set the requirements — the price, how long you need to stay and how far you are willing to walk. Rutis picks the cheapest space that meets all of them.

You decide. Rutis does the comparing.

Around it the parking spaces sit as coloured markers with the price in kronor per hour written inside them, orange twelves and eighteens. The space Rutis picks is ringed in gold with a star, and a card at the bottom names it: Kronhjortsgatan, a seven-minute walk, 605 metres, 12 kronor an hour.

Free spaces

You may not have to pay at all.

Free parking can be hard to find. Most payment apps only show the spaces you can pay for through the app – not all the places you are actually allowed to park for nothing.

Rutis shows both free and paid options on the same map, so you can see what there is to choose from before you set off.

Why pay 20 kr an hour when you could park for free a few minutes away?

Why Rutis exists

I built it because I was tired of hunting for parking.

Every time my family and I were going somewhere, the same routine began.

Google Maps to find my destination on the map. Parking apps to find that destination by hand all over again on a map that was hard to read, because they rarely let me search for an address. Then parking space after parking space for the price and the time, and back to the map to work out how far the walk was.

So many steps, just to find a parking space that actually fits.

That was when I started thinking: Why is there no app that does all of this for me?

Gothenburg came first. Partly because it is where I get around, partly because the price differences can be enormous over short distances – sometimes one block is enough to halve the price, if only you know where.

Rutis is the app I was missing myself.

I built it because I needed it myself, and I genuinely believe I am not the only one.

Where the data comes from

Real parking data. No guesswork.

Rutis does not invent prices. Everything comes from the cities’ own open parking data. If we cannot establish what a space costs, we would rather not show it at all than guess.

From the cities Prices, time limits, parking bans and street-cleaning hours all come from the cities’ own parking data.
